CFK Description
Our program is a combination of body weight calisthenics, gymnastics and weight lifting elements. We use that combination to develop ability in ten general physical skills: cardio-respiratory endurance, power, strength, stamina, speed, agility, flexibility, balance, accuracy, and coordination. There are also the benefits of bone density and stimulation of the vestibular system. The program is designed to keep kids and teens focused and entertained while creating the foundations for an athletic life. We also discuss nutrition as the basis of all athletic movement.
CFK Philosophy
The reason we at CrossFit Zone have a kids program is simple: there is desperation in our population to redefine what “fitness” is, and it starts with the youth. Can you imagine if you started LOVING exercise and CRAVING that sense of achievement at the age of five or even ten? How would your life have changed if your body had almost zero limitations? We believe that CFKids will shape the lives of your little ones in such a positive way so they will reap the benefits of having a lifelong relationship with “fitness”.
Is It Safe?
YES! Our CrossFit Kids trainer has been through rigorous training on ways to make the exercise as safe and beneficial as possible for the kids. She is versed in the science behind children bearing weight and knows the appropriate weight (if any) to let a child train with. All of our classes start with the nine fundamental movements in CrossFit and the focus is not on lifting weight the way we do in our adult programs. Until children are entering their teens, the focus is absolutely not on lifting heavy weight. We ARE NOT training mini Olympic lifters! Rather, we’re teaching kids how to safely pick up their backpack or get across the monkey bars in a more efficient way.
Why Should My Kid Do CFK?
Because MOVEMENT=LIFE and LIFE=HEALTH. The quality of your child’s HEALTH will improve dramatically in the following areas:
· Cardiovascular/Endurance
· Muscle Strength
· Bone growth
· Safety/Efficiency
· Muscle/Brain connection
Optimization Of The Brain
This, for us, is the most exciting bonus to any CFK program! Physical fitness has a positive correlation to grades, standardized tests and cognitive tests. When children exercise, neuro-transmitters and blood flow increases and lactate is released from the muscles (lactate for kids=energy for the brain. Research has found that there is optimal learning capacity of the brain for 20-40 minutes after exercise. Hence, the best time for your child to study is directly after class. Go ahead and encourage your child to study for 15-20 minutes after their workout, and then keep track of their academic progress!
The Bottom Line
Well established, the CrossFit Kids program is profoundly changing the lives of children and teens around the world, in the gym and beyond. We’re cultivating a group of kids who are better equipped to face whatever life brings them. It isn’t about winning or losing. It’s about character building and defining success in a positive manner.
CrossFit Kids are working from a different paradigm than most of their peers. They view themselves as competent and capable. Appropriate risk taking and weathering the storms of life come more naturally to them. They’re disciplined; they know how to persevere; they have learned to accept delayed gratification. CrossFit Kids no longer look at obstacles as blocks to their progress. They see obstacles as opportunities to apply themselves and succeed. It is rarely a question of whether they can do something. It’s a question of when they will do it.
Most importantly, WE’RE HAVING FUN!!!
Sane nutrition for kids in 150 words:
Our goal with kids isn’t to get them on a diet, but to get them to think and make good choices about what they eat. Our goal is to teach them very basic concepts, sugar is bad, protein is good and you need to eat some in every meal. Nuts and seeds are good fats. Eat them, don’t avoid them. Pasta, white bread, and white rice are not that good for you, stuff that’s red, yellow, green and found in the fruit and vegetable aisle is good for you. Eat a lot of it.
Look at your plate, make a fist, eat that much meat every meal; turn your hand over and fill it with nuts and seeds, eat that much good fat, fill the rest of your plate with stuff you found in the fruit and vegetable aisle. Fill your plate this way at every meal, don’t eat more.
